Ripon Red Arrows 5 v Clifford 2 Despite a shaky start, struggling Ripon Red Arrows proved their worth with a gritty performance and ultimate 5-2 victory against Clifford.
Within five minutes Clifford had broken through the Arrows’ defence and scored. Moments later a controversial penalty allowed the visitors to increase their lead further. The awarding of a second highly controversial penalty looked likely to seal defeat for the Arrows but Clifford were unable convert.
With the break imminent Arrows’ captain Darren Gendall drove a low shot home. Spirits high, Dan Sheppard’s brought the half-time scores level with a skilful swivelling shot into the top left corner.
Ten minutes into the second-half and Lee Fagg calmly placed Matthew Clarke’s acutely angled pass into the net for the Arrows. Clifford tried to rally a comeback but were denied by Arrows’ substitute ‘keeper Anthony Mackle’s safe hands. Arrows continued on the attack and, with fifteen minutes remaining, Lee Fagg’s corner was crisply headed in by Darren Gendall. Sweeping up a rebounding ball Matthew Clarke polished off a well deserved win for the Arrows. |

Boroughbridge 5 v Ripon Red Arrows 2 Boroughbridge’s recent late season signings paid dividend with a 5-2 victory over visitors Ripon Red Arrows.
A low, solid plant into the bottom left-hand corner gave Boroughbridge an early lead. This was further extended in the twenty fourth minute when a looping shot beat Arrows’ substitute goalkeeper Steve Kniveton. Five minutes later Boroughbridge scored with a rebound off the post. The Arrows’ hard fought efforts were however rewarded when Lee Fagg placed a classy free kick straight over the wall and the ‘keeper. As the break drew close Victor Todd continued to keep the Arrows in the game with a valiant clearance off the line.
Having beaten the ‘keeper, Lee Fagg brought the Arrows right back into play with another goal minutes into the second-half. Boroughbridge however had different ideas, scoring twice more in the sixty first and ninetieth minute.

Empress 5 v Ripon Red Arrows 2 Unable to capitalise on last week’s heroic performance, Ripon Red Arrows were defeated 5-2 by a rampant Empress in the quarter finals of the Hulme Cup.
Within six minutes Empress had taken full advantage of an error by Arrows’ centre of defence. Five minutes later hosts, Empress, blasted the ball into the top of the net from twenty yards. Slicing Anthony Mackles’ corner low, Matthew Clarke clawed one back for the Arrows within minutes. Just as the game was coming into its own, a highly controversial Empress goal resulted in the Arrows playing out the match with a depleted ten man team.
Fighting hard the Arrows managed to restrain Empress until the seventy fifth minute. Undeterred, Arrows’ striker Danny Sheppard collected Dave Cooper’s forceful forward ball and nutmegged the ‘keeper. With only sixty seconds of injury time remaining Empress sealed their place in the semi-finals with a final goal.

Medal Competition - 14 January 2006 Harold Styans 0 v Ripon Red Arrows 3 To first division Harold Styans’ consternation Ripon Red Arrows claimed an astonishing 3-0 victory in the second round of the Medal Competition.
Despite having beaten Arrows’ substitute goalkeeper, Steve Kniveton, within the first ten minutes, Harold Styans were denied a goal on the line by Victor Todd’s exceptional defending. Twenty minutes later Shaun Puttock collected the ball from Arrows’ defender Dan Young and coolly placed it inches from the far post where Matthew Clarke was waiting to tap it home. With the break looming the Arrows rallied again. This time Matthew Clarke blasted Shaun Puttock’s measured pass into the top of the net.
Harold Styans tried to pile on the pressure in the second-half but stout defending by the Arrows’ simply absorbed all advances. With the clock ticking Dave Cooper sent a peach of a ball over Styans’ last defender and, having wrong footed the ‘keeper, Lee Fagg scored the last goal of the match.

Harrogate & District League Division 2 - 07 January 2006 Ripon Red Arrows 0 v Empress 7 Unable to muster the fine performance found at the close of 2005, Ripon Red Arrows were woefully defeated at home by Empress.
Having taken full advantage of a defensive error, Empress took the lead in the seventeenth minute. With a further goal thirteen minutes later, Ripon Red Arrows finished the first-half 2-0 down.
Despite having saved two goals on the line, Arrows’ stand-in goalkeeper, Victor Todd, was unable to prevent Empress’ second-half onslaught. Final score: 7-0 to Empress.

Harrogate & District League Division 2 - 17 December 2005 Ripon Red Arrows 4 v Knaresborough 3 Ripon Red Arrows turned back the tide with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Knaresborough Celtic.
Five minutes in and Matthew Clarke’s parried shot was scrambled home for the Arrows. Twenty five minutes later, Lee Fagg’s powerful strike 40 yards out caught Celtic’s goalkeeper off guard. Then, minutes before the break, Alan Kyle gave the Arrows a 3-0 advantage when he coolly finished his charge with a lob over the ‘keeper.
Celtic started the second-half with a fight back and, within minutes, had taken full advantage of a poorly cleared ball by the Arrows. With neither team managing to capitalise on their hard fought attempts it looked as though the score would remain 3-1 to the Arrows. Then, Celtic scored again in the eighty fifth minute. One minute later Lee Fagg replied for the Arrows with a wicked right wing shot 30 yards from the box. Despite Celtic’s conversion from a free-kick a further minute later the Arrows completed 2005 with a three point win.

Harrogate & District League Division 2 - 10 December 2005 Albert 2 v Ripon Red Arrows 1 Ripon Red Arrows battled hard against table toppers Albert but, despite outstanding goalkeeping by Andy Kirkbright, found themselves 2-0 down at the break.
In the second-half Arrows tested Albert’s defence and, in the fifty fifth minute, Lee Fagg drove the collected flick-on from Alan Kyle straight through the keeper’s legs. Unfortunately Arrows were unable to capitalise further on their chances and the final score stood at 2-1 in Albert’s favour.

Harrogate & District League Division 2 - 26 November 2005 Clifford 5 v Ripon Red Arrows 1 An underpowered Ripon Red Arrows team looked as though they would have to break with a four goal deficit against hosts Clifford. Then Matthew Clarke’s spectacular cross allowed Danny Shepphard to head the ball home in the forty fourth minute.
Despite a good performance in the second-half, Arrows were unable to claw themselves back into the game, final score 5-1 to Clifford.

Harrogate & District League Div 2 - 19 November 2005 Ripon Red Arrows 2 v Albert 4 Having been caught off guard, Ripon Red Arrows found themselves conceding an own goal to visitors Albert within the first minute of play. A powerful header by Lee Fagg six minutes later however brought the Arrows back into the game. Two minutes before half-time and Albert had managed to regain the lead by converting a penalty.
In the seventy second minute Albert scored again. Thirteen minutes later, Lee Fagg kept the Arrows in touch with a clinically converted penalty. However, Albert sealed their victory in the eighty seventh minute with a forth and final goal.

Harrogate & District League Div 2 - 12 November 2005 Empress 4 v Ripon Red Arrows 2 Taking full advantage of an Arrows’ defensive error, Empress had snatched the lead within sixty seconds of play. Twenty nine minutes later Shaun Puttock’s powerfully low drive, from Lee Fagg’s deflective throw-in, resulted in the Arrows drawing level. Empress however scored twice more before half-time, each just scraping past the outstretched arms of Arrows’ goalkeeper, Andy Kirkbright.
With thirteen minutes remaining Dan Young’s cracking on target free-kick resulted in a penalty for the Arrows. Crisp conversion by Danny Shepphard gave sweet reward for his earlier efforts. Despite further defensive mix-ups, Andy Kirkbright’s courageous goalkeeping managed to keep the Arrows’ hopes alive until the eighty seventh minute when Empress sealed a win with a penalty.

Ripon Red Arrows 2 v Boroughbridge A 2 Eventually end to end play was broken, five minutes into the second-half, by visitors Boroughbridge ‘A’. Ten minutes later, Matthew Clarke’s nifty back pass allowed Lee Fagg to rocket the ball into the top right-hand corner and level the score for the Arrows. In the seventy second minute, having received the ball from Anthony Mackle, Lee Fagg took the lead for the Arrows with a creative bicycle kick. However, despite Andy Kirkbright’s outstanding goalkeeping, the Arrows had to settle for a draw when Boroughbridge’s powerful low ball found the back of the net with only seven minutes remaining. |

Sherwood Res 4 v Ripon Red Arrows 1 Ripon Red Arrows were unable to capitalise on last week’s tremendous form and, with the final score 4-1, had to admit defeat when they met Sherwood Reserves. Within two minutes hosts Sherwood had taken an early lead. Thirty minutes later and Sherwood had scored again. The second-half saw the Arrows try to make an impact but by the sixty fifth minute the hosts had managed to seize two further goals. With only four minutes remaining Steve Kniveton sent a swooping ball from deep in the Arrows’ half onto the edge of the eighteen yard box. Here Matthew Clarke swept in and swiftly dribbled past the ‘keeper to gain a consolation goal for the Arrows.

Spa Athletic Res 2 v Ripon Red Arrows 3
Ripon Red Arrows surprised first division Spa Athletic Reserves with a 2-3 victory in the Hulme Cup.
Hosts, Spa Athletic, took the lead in the twenty eighth minute with a sharp shot from point blank range. A cynical challenge on Arrows’ captain, Lee Fagg, fired up the Arrows’ and, in seventy fourth minute, their hard fought efforts were rewarded when a free kick was sent into the net by Matthew Clarke. Two minutes later, Danny Shepphard’s nifty footwork foxed the keeper and gave the Arrows’ the lead. Within minutes Matthew Clarke sent Lee Fagg’s long throw into the box where Darren Gendall’s cool control sealed a win for the Arrows. Although Spa gained a late consolation goal four minutes before the final whistle, it was never going to be enough.

Ripon Red Arrows 1 v Burley Trojans Res 5
Having taken full advantage of a free kick in the nineteenth minute, Burley Trojans Reserves increased their lead further ten minutes later with a shot at short range. Another ten minutes and the visitors scored again.
Undeterred by the 3-0 half-time score, Danny Shepphard, with the assistance of Darren Gendall, scored for the Arrows three minutes into the second-half. Despite Andy Kirkbright’s valiant goal keeping, Trojans scored once again in the twenty third minute. A scrappy goal from a corner minutes before full-time brought the final score to 5-1.

Alverton Trophy - 01 October 2005
Ripon Red Arrows 2 Sherwood Res 4
Unable to capitalise on the late change of venue, Ripon Red Arrows were forced out of the Alverton Trophy in the first round by Sherwood Reserves.
Visitors, Sherwood, were handed the lead in the twenty third minute when Dan Young, Arrows’ defender, scored an unfortunate own goal. Ten minutes later, Sherwood extended their lead by firmly placing the ball into the top left corner.
In the second-half Sherwood’s unstoppable blast from thirty yards was quickly followed by a fourth goal. With only ten minutes remaining, Ripon Red Arrows’ efforts were eventually rewarded. Turning tightly eighteen yards out, Robert Mackle’s left foot sent the ball into the net. Despite Matthew Clarke’s long looping shot moments later the Arrows had simply left it too late to redeem themselves.

Ripon Red Arrows 3 v Otley Town B 1
The end to end play was eventually broken in the twenty seventh minute when Arrows’ captain, Lee Fagg, calmly took full advantage of his rebounded free kick to put the Arrows 1-0 ahead.
Ten minutes into the second half and Otley Town’s return of fire was met by a magnificent fingertip save from Arrows’ keeper, Andy Kirkbright. This was followed by Dan Young, Arrows’ defender, clearing the on target corner with a superb header. Two minutes later, with the aid of a quick throw from Matthew Clarke, Danny Shepphard beat the visitors’ keeper.
Despite the hosts keeping the pressure on, Otley Town broke with a powerful strike into the top corner. All three points for the Arrows were however comfortably secured when Danny Shepphard steamed on to the ball which had been carried by Dave Cooper, Arrows’ player manager, from the halfway line to the penalty spot.

League Challenge Cup - 24 September 2005
Ripon Red Arrows 1 v Beckwithshaw Saints 2
This week Ripon Red Arrows played host to premier division Beckwithshaw Saints in the League Challenge Cup.
Within two minutes Lee Fagg’s free kick was spectacularly headed home for the Arrows by Darren Gendall. A minute later and the visitors had levelled score. Saints then took the lead with a scrappy goal in the twenty fifth minute.
A thrilling, hard fought second-half saw the visitors eventually hang-on to their lead to the very end.

Ripon Red Arrows 3 v Sherwood Res 5
The Arrows’ new season’s hopes were shattered in the eighth minute when Lee Fagg gave Sherwood the advantage with an unstoppable own goal. The following twenty minutes saw Dave Freeman, Matthew Clarke and Danny Shepperd all rally the attack for the Arrows’ without glory. Then, Dave Cooper, player manager, placed an inch perfect ball from the defence to striker Paul Lund who lobbed the keeper.
Despite the Arrows’ continuing to keep the pressure on, the second half saw recently promoted Sherwood score twice in quick succession. With thirty minutes to go, Shaun Puttock brought the Arrows back into the game with a flicked header. Minutes later, in a bid to redeem his earlier mistake, Lee Fagg floated past two opposition players and struck a hard shot into the bottom right-hand corner. Just as it looked like both teams would have to settle for a point from this fast and furious game, the visitors secured a win with two further goals.
